Money isn't the only measurement that matters
Rory McIlroy got hosed along with every other golfer that stayed true to the PGA Tour. That doesn't mean they did the wrong thing, though. Staying true to your principles is worth something, right?
Rory McIlroy made a stand behind what he thought was right.
This may not mean much in the overall scheme of things. It’s certainly not going to provide him with the (hundreds of) millions of dollars he likely passed on when he opted to stick with the PGA Tour instead of signing with LIV Golf a year ago, but it’s not nothing, either. I feel the need to point this out because everyone seems to assume that money is the only way to measure the winners in golf’s civil war, which means that McIlroy and all the other golfers who stuck with the PGA Tour will be deemed the biggest losers.
That’s unfortunate, and I hope McIlroy feels at least a little proud of the fact that he stood true to what he thought was right instead of acting in naked self-interest. I know that I feel proud of one specific occasion when I did that, and while the stakes were significantly lower, I was also nowhere near as rich as McIlroy. But before I bore you with the details of a newspaper strike from more than 20 years ago let’s talk about how McIlroy got hosed.
