Where's the beef?
I'm wondering how exactly Seattle plans to stock the middle of its defense given the direction it went with its pair of first-round choices.
The Seahawks showed an enduring inability to stop opponents from running the ball last season. It was their fatal flaw.
So of course, using the highest pick they’ve had in any draft since 2009, they chose someone to defend passes in cornerback Devon Witherspoon. And then – using a second first-round pick for the first time since 2010 – they picked someone who would catch them in receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
I’m not saying these were bad choices or even arguing that Seattle should have done something different. Teams get in trouble in the draft when they chase need as opposed to taking the best player. I am, however, confessing to the fact that I’m puzzled. I’m not exactly certain how the Seahawks are going to address what was so obviously the biggest deficiency last year when they ranked 30th against the run ahead. Only the two sorriest teams in the league — the Bears and the Texans — gave up more on the ground.
