After 25 years being paid to cover Seattle sports, it was good to know I still feel something for my favorite team even if what I felt on Saturday was teeth-gnashing, garment-rending pain.
Great to see you putting out content Danny. Hope to hear you back on the air in some fashion, whether it's guesting at 950 or on Unfiltered or whatever you come up with on your own. It would be a shame not to continue to hear your blend of insight and humor on at least a semi-regular basis. Thanks for putting this together. Wish the first topic was a little more pleasant though lol.
KIRO lost half the wit and personality on their station when they dumped Jim Moore, now they have lost the other half with you gone. (Although Wyman accounts for a little). I loved listening to you three together...what a hoot. I'm glad you are doing this newsletter, Danny, and will be a loyal reader. Your true wit comes through on the air, however, and I hope to hear that voice again.
I moved to Seattle from my hometown on O’ahu in ‘93 because I wanted to watch Griffey play every single day. This led me to becoming a true Seattle sports fan, and as a byproduct I became addicted to sports radio and the live game broadcasts. The best duo I ever heard was Calabro/Johnson on the Sonics calls, and of course Dave and Rizz calling the M’s was always great. I moved to Japan eleven years ago but have remained loyal to Seattle’s teams. One avenue of info that’s kept me informed and engaged in the teams was by listening to you at 710 espn. Danny, Dave, and Moore was really terrific radio, and I listened to all 15 hours per week from here in Japan.
Danny, you have a unique voice and I always enjoy your take on things, your humor and grace. While I understand the economics of change at 710, I think the station lost their heart when they let you go. This feels like the end of an era for me, but I hope that it’s the start of something new and great for you. I will be here, happily drinking all of your ink, and looking forward to following you on whatever endeavors that lie ahead.
This is super nice of you to say, Tommy. I won't say that I'm surprised at how many people stay connected to Seattle sports while listening to local radio programming while overseas, but it certainly is pretty humbling. Working with Dave, Jim and Jess on a daily basis for 5 years was one of the absolutely funniest experiences of my life. It was truly, genuinely hilarious.
I'm naive enough to be excited about this new chapter for me. I'm not sure exactly what lies ahead, but I'm really grateful that you -- and others -- have signed up. Thanks!
That would be awesome. If for no other reason than I so enjoyed Moore flustering Wyman as DO just sat back and laughed. And not one of those fake insincere "it's not funny but I have to play my part laughs," but side splitting actual laughter. To say it lightened my mood on tough days would be underselling it by a mile.
In one game, Jimmy Lake and UW went from a being a very believable championship program, to a program that could believably never finish in the top half of the PAC-North. The truth is UW is somewhere in the middle and far closer to the the former than the latter, but it’s hard so see any of it. There just isn’t much to believe in with the OC. We don’t have our top 4 receivers. We have the “best O-line in the PAC-12,” and we throw the ball 46 times? Jimmy Lake wants to be Stanford (I agree) and he allows the OC to throw the ball 46 times? It’s not just that UW lost to Montana. It’s not just that UW scored only 7 points. It’s not just that the OC seems to have no clue how to design a play that gets anyone open at any level. It’s the idea that the head coach let this happen in a way that is so antithetical to what he preaches that is most disheartening to me. UW losing after 70 rushes behind that O-line, down their top 4 WRs, against a Big Sky team would have been infinitely worse, but also infinitely more acceptable than what happened.
Awesome analysis, DO. Now, let's grant you the following choice.
1. Keep the current Husky OC for the remainder of the year and hope for an explosion of offensive efficiency and creativity that leaves you arguing for a Donovan extension.
Or......
2. Find and relocate one Jeremy Bates to take over the role for the remainder of the season. His acumen and measured 3rd down philosophy of asking his QB to hurl the ball no less than 27 yards on all 3rd and 1 plays not withstanding....it could be interesting.
Aside from wanting me to fall in front of the next moving subway you ride for coming up with this idiotic binary choice, what say you?
Excellent writing. Fun to read. Today was day one and we heard the other side of what happened at 710. I have no logs in the fire. I liked you all, even Michael Grey. Hope to hear you again an looking forward to more great reading.
As we like to say in the Big Ten, "Beat Michigan and you will instantly feel better!"

If you did a podcast I’d listen to it on the way to work in the morning. It would beat the alternative that’s for sure.

Yes those 3 had quite the chemistry

Great read 👍 Looking forward to more columns!
You were a great radio host Danny, their loss. Looking forward to your newsletter.
Once Wyman gets canned/leaves, I suggest a misfit radio reunion. Go cougs!

Subscribed! We’ll keep listening as long as you keep writing/speaking.
Thanks Danny. Keep them coming👍👍

Thanks bud, always like to hear your take!
Great history of the OC. It's not just a loss to Montana but the UW point total was stunning.

Will miss you on the radio..you were a great vocabulary builder…verbose to the point of annoying.
