Having grown up with only small family Thanksgivings, etc., the initial thought of a big gathering can seem a bit overwhelming. But the O'Neil Yosemite conclave sounds like tons of fun. And I'm sure this year will be no different. Happy TNX to you, Sharon, and the whole clan.

PS Looking at that pic, you're definitely your Dad's son.

Oh man, Danny, now I’m crying into my morning coffee. With extra guilt because I won’t be there this year. But so much love for you and your family, especially your mom, and all those Thanksgivings in Wawona. (There was that time 5 year old Kathleen licked all the salt off the chips and put them back in the bag everyone was eating out of, or the year Vons gave out free turkeys with purchase over $100 and there were 5 entire turkeys left over at the end of the day, and that time there were two dinosaurs letting loose in the dance contest…) hopefully will see you next year, if not before.

Was wonderful seeing everyone. I am so grateful for the article, my infamous dessert delivery mention, getting to see you and Sharon.

As a kid the trip to Yosemite at Thanksgiving meant so much to me. I could never put it all into words. It has been very special watching my kids look forward to and enjoy this trip as much as I have over the many years.

I clicked the like button because there is not a love button and what a great family pic. our family's big thanksgiving gatherings ended in '72 when we moved from socal to seattle and those are still great memories. glad you were able to rejoin yours.

Well Danny you made me cry thanks for that. Thanks for the reminder on how fragile life is and to treasure the moments we have with those we are closest too. Have a great thanksgiving!

Danny, thank you for a fabulous look into your history and the importance of tradition and family. Reminded me so much of my family's holiday get togethers in Southern Oregon (Medford area) where I grew up. Especially the comment about not remembering the food, but the people. Reminds you what is important in life. I'm also reminded as the Matriarch of our family my Grandmother (Fern Hagler) passed away in September and while there will still be holiday gatherings there will be a large piece missing. I was born in 1975 in Medford, spent my first 18 years there, attended UW the same time as you. Nice to reminisce. Thanks again for the article and look forward to more as well as your time with Mitch. Happy Thanksgiving!!! -Luke Hagler

Another incredibly stirring and courageously vulnerable dispatch. Bravo, Danny. I'm very happy to read that you've kept the Yosemite tradition alive.

A few moments of serenity from my own trip (with wife and dog) to Wawona a few years back:
