The Mariners and the uncomfortable dollar
Seattle is expected to be good. I believe they not only could, but should be better if their owners weren't so willing to sit on their wallets and hope everything goes right.
It is not easy being a Mariners fan, but I probably don’t need to tell you that.
This is the only Major League team never to have appeared in a World Series. The franchise has five playoff berths in its 47-year history, which is equal to the number of testicles its players have ruptured during that time1; there are five of each. The team has reached the postseason exactly once in the previous 22 seasons.
So this should be a time of extreme excitement. After all, the Mariners are expected to be good. Most projection models have them pegged for the high-80s in victory totals. A few brave souls have predicted they’ll win the American League West. I am legitimately excited for this season.
I am also a bit disappointed, which is something I think many Mariners fans can understand. Even when they’re supposed to be good, there’s an asterisk.2
